Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader speaking to the media on on Saturday (Feb 9) at the Awami League chief’s Dhanmondi office. The aspirants of the vice chairman post will be able to contest independently during the Upazila Council polls, says Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
His remarks came on Saturday (Feb 9) during a media briefing at the Awami League chief’s Dhanmondi office.
“Since the BNP is not taking part, the polls should be a bit more competitive,” Quader said.
The Upazila polls will be held in party lines for the very first time, meaning candidates will contest with a political party’s registered electoral symbol. However, Awami League has decided to give party ticket for the post of chairman only.
They were supposed to nominate two vice chairmen candidates as well but this move means that there will no longer be a party ticket for them.
Earlier on Saturday, the AL announced the names of 87 chairman candidates to contest the first-phase of fifth Upazila Council polls, slated for Mar 10.
On Feb 4, the ruling party started the sale of nomination papers to those who want to contest the first-phase of the upazila elections.
For the first phase of the polls, the last date for submitting nomination papers is February 11 the last date to drop out of the race is February 19.
Similar to the last one, the upcoming upazila polls will be administered in several phased starting from March.
