BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaking at a programme in Dhaka on Friday (Jan 18) marking the 83rd birth anniversary of the party founder late president Ziaur Rahman. After suffering a massive defeat in the 11th Parliamentary Election, the senior leaders of BNP have now become vocal for reorganising the 40-year old party.
Late president Ziaur Rahman founded BNP on Sept 1, 1978, which the ruling Awami League often refer to as “cantonment-born” party.
The senior leaders’ call came at a programme in Dhaka on Friday (Jan 18) marking the party founder’s 83rd birth anniversary.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called on the party activists to unite people for waging a movement to restore democracy.
“We have to stand united to free Khaleda Zia from jail,” he added.
Saying that the Awami League wants to hold on to power forever, Mirza Fakhrul added, “They (AL) are using the Constitution and the state machinery to serve party agendas.”
BNP’s policymaking National Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain called the activists to buckle up and reorganise the party.
“The party will be reorganised through council, he said adding “Tested activists will be brought to the front.”
Another Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed echoed Mosharraf saying, “We will step aside if needed and devoted activists will be at the forefront.”
