Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. FILE PHOTOThe government is desperate to take out BNP from the political arena by resorting evil ways, alleged the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

“Phantom and baseless cases are being filed against our party activists to keep them behind bars for prolonging,” Fakhrul said in a written statement on Thursday (Jan 10).

“BNP’s candidate for Jhenaidah-4, Saiful Islam Firoze, has been sent to jail scraping his bail plea,” he said before adding that the party demands his release.

The senior BNP leader alleged that Firoze is a victim of the government’s political vendetta.

“The Awami League’s intention is to prolong their one-party rule by taking out any opposition including BNP” the statement read.
