“Sitting out from the polls is not an option. We will continue our campaign despite being attacked,” senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas said on Saturday (Dec 15).Boycotting the polls is not an option for the BNP and the party is going nowhere, says senior leader Mirza Abbas.

“Sitting out from the polls is not an option. We will continue our campaign despite being attacked,” Abbas said on Saturday (Dec 15) during a media brief organised at his Shahjahanpur residence.

Alleging that his campaign came under attack on Saturday, the former minister said, “I want to ask the government, what will make you people happy? Please, announce it in public. You said that the BNP wants to step away from the polls. In fact, you want to remove us from the equation. But the BNP will not go anywhere and people will vote.”

“The result will reflect people’s judgement which will be in favour of BNP and the Jatiya Oikya Front or, else we will understand that the government and the Election Commission have deceived the masses,” added the National Standing Committee member of BNP.

Accusing Awami League ‘goons’ and police of torturing BNP activists, Abbas asked, “To what extent should we tolerate to take part in the polls?”

Abbas alleged that a group of youth armed with sticks, rods and guns launched an assault on his campaign at the city’s Segunbagicha area.

Over 60 BNP activists sustained injuries in the attack, he said.

“We informed the police before launching our campaign. Shahbag police received the letter but Ramna police didn’t,” Abbas said before adding, police arrested seven of his supporters from his residence after the attack.

Two of his injured supporters were held from the hospital where they went for treatment, he added.
