JP seats from Grand Alliance cut down to 27

RAJIB DHARThe ruling Awami League-led Grand Alliance has sent its candidates’ list to the Election Commission keeping 27 seats vacant for HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party.
The letter signed by party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested the Commission to allot the listed aspirants its polls logo ‘boat’.
Sources at the Commission confirmed that the letter sent on Sunday (Dec 9) names 247 Awami League (AL) candidates.
According to the list, seen by Bangla Tribune, AL has nominated candidates in 258 seats out of the 300. It also includes names of an additional 16 candidates, which include 14 who are members of its six allies and will contest with ‘boat’ symbol.
The list sent to the EC also includes two more names, who will run with the polls logo ‘bicycle’.
Altogether, the list features 273 candidates, leaving 27 seats for Ershad’s Jatiya Party, according to people familiar with the matter.

Earlier in the day, Jatiya Party submitted a list of its 172 candidates to the Election Commission (EC), who will contest with the party’s logo ‘plough’.
Its Presidium member SM Faisal Chishti told the media at the EC offices then that they have been allocated 29 seats as part of the Grand Alliance and will run candidates for 143 seats separate from the coalition.
