Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)Nominations of around 80 BNP candidates have been cancelled by returning officers. In three seats, there is an absolute absence of BNP candidates.
Many BNP leaders feel that this happened since adequate preparation was not taken beforehand.
“This (cancellation) has taken place due to the negligence of some candidates,” they said.
A BNP Standing Committee Member commented: “BNP will have a meeting today on the revocation of nominations; candidates from the Oikya Front will be promoted in seats which are vacant.”
It’s found that nominations were cancelled in many cases since signature of candidates were missing in the loan defaulters oath and other election related papers.
For defaulting on loan repayment, the nomination of BNP candidate, Fakir mahbub Anam, for Tangail-1 was cancelled. He said, “I went to the bank which accused me of defaulting and fixed everything on 29 November.”
I will move a writ in High Court against the cancellation, he asserted.
Morshed Liton, whose nomination from Bogura-7 was cancelled, told Bangla Tribune: “I resigned from my post as upazila chairman and the resignation was submitted to the ministry of local government.”
Now they are saying that the resignation was not accepted, lamented Liton.
The nomination of Golam Mowla Rony, from Patuakhali-3 seat, was cancelled. Rony says: “My nomination was revoked due to the absence of a sign on the oath form given from the Election Commission.”
Saying that the sign could have been taken instead of cancellation, he added: “I will appeal against it at the EC.”
BNP standing committee member, Gayeshar Chandra Roy told Bangla Tribune: “If someone’s nomination is cancelled then an appeal can be made at the Election Commission within three days; our candidates will follow that rule.”
A steering committee member of Jatiya Oikya Front, said that the ruling AL was uncomfortable when BNP decided to join the election and is trying to find faults in all BNP nominations.”
