Who will Oikyo Front nominee as the prime minister if they win the upcoming national election, a US diplomat official has reportedly asked the newly formed anti-government alliance.

US embassy Political Officer William Moeller on Thursday posed the question to Oikya Front’s key leader Dr Kamal Hossain during a meeting between the alliance leaders and Dhaka based diplomats.

Hossain, reportedly replied that the Parliament will decide.

Last month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New York and asked about the PM’s feeling about the upcoming election and people’s enthusiasm about it.

Moeller also wanted to know the Oikyo Front’s position about the stiff opposition of Bikalpadhara’s stance against Jamaat.

Dr Kamal, without giving a direct reply, said they hoped the party would join the coalition.

According to sources aware of the exchange during the meeting, held at the capital’s Lakeshore hotel, Hossain read out the alliance’s 7-point demands and 11-point visions to the diplomats.

Among other queries made by the diplomats, they wanted to know who will be counterpart of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, given the BNP chief is behind the bars.

Hossain, in response, said, “There is no singular leadership. Everything is being run under collective leadership.”

The meeting started with an opening remark by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Zamir Uddin Sircer, JSD President ASM Abdur Rab and Nagorik Oikya Chief Mahmudur Rahman Manna were present among others.

Diplomats from around 30 countries including US, UK, China, EU, Japan, Germany, France, Japan and Australia were present in the meeting.
