Reportedly, a rift has taken form within Khaleda Zia’s legal team after the submission of an appeal related to the Zia orphanage graft case.

One of the reasons of the division is the absence of a full-fledged committee of the nationalist lawyers’ forum for ten years.

Currently, two groups are visible among Khaleda Zia’s legal team. One is led by the president of the supreme court lawyers’ association, Zainul Abedin and barrister Mahbibuddin Khokon.

They are active through regular press conferences but another section is not happy by press meets only. This section is led by barrister Taimur Alam Akhand.

He said: “only press conferences won’t do; to free Khaleda Zia, we need to come out on the streets. With this aim, we are carrying out the campaign, ‘Free democracy and Khaleda Zia movement’.

It’s believed that there are other divisions too within the lawyers.

Certain lawyers appear during Khaleda Zia’s hearing as a formality and are not given any task. They are not even consulted when case files are made. In this regard, barrister Kaiser Kamal’s name has emerged.

Reportedly, he prepares the files in his chamber and never consults senior lawyers.

There have been several instances when the rift became apparent. However, refuting these claims, barrister Kamal says: “these are fabricated; all lawyers are working unitedly to secure the release of Khaleda Zia.”

Meanwhile, advocate Zainul Abedin refused to make any comment on the alleged division among the lawyers.”
