Awami League (AL) organises a diplomatic briefing at Dhaka’s Lakeshore Hotel on Monday (Oct 15).The victims of the August 21 grenade attack have demanded the highest punishment for Tarique Rahman at a diplomatic briefing organized by the Awami League (AL) on Monday at Dhaka’s Lakeshore Hotel.
The briefing was chaired by Ambassador Mohammad Zamir, chairman of the Bangladesh Awami League International Affairs Sub-Committee and directed by AL International Affairs Secretary Dr Shammi Ahmed.
The event was moderated by Barrister Shah Ali Farhad.
The AL League leaders present at the briefing stated that killing Sheikh Hasina and rendering the party leaderless was the main objective of the August 21 grenade attack in 2004.
Dignitaries from 50 countries and international organisations, including UK, USA, EU, Australia, India, China, attended the briefing. Victims of the 21st August grenade attack were also present at the event.
“Even 14 years on, I still suffer from the pain from the splinters in my body and the doctors have said that I might need to amputate my left leg”, said Dr Rumi, one of the victims of the attack.
Diplomatic corps of different missions in Dhaka join a briefing organised by ruling Awami League at Dhaka’s Lakeshore Hotel on Monday (Oct 15).Another victim, Selim said that before he dies his only wish is to see the death penalty executed for all the perpetrators of the attack, including Tarique Rahman.
Everyone present at the briefing became emotional upon hearing the victims’ first-hand accounts.
AL Presidium Member lawmaker Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan, Joint General Secretary and former foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam were, among others, present.
Faruk Khan recounted the memories of the heinous attack. He described how the then BNP-Jamaat government thwarted investigation using state machinery.
State Minister Shahriar Alam said that although he was content that the verdict was finally out, he expressed reservations with the verdict for not having given Tarique Rahman the death penalty for being the mastermind behind the attack.
Dr Shammi Ahmed requested support from the international community to bring back the fugitive perpetrators to face justice and uphold the rule of law.
