BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has returned from the US via London, where he briefed acting party chief Tarique Rahman on his meetings with the UN and the US state department.
His flight landed Dhaka on Sunday evening, Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP chief’s media wing, told Bangla Tribune.
Several leaders of the BNP’s UK unit said on condition of anonymity that the secretary general arrived to London on Saturday and later in the day had a meeting with Tarique, reported Bangla Tribune’s London correspondent.
BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Humayun Kabir and Central Executive Committee member Tabith Awal also attended the meeting, according to them.
Mirza Fakhrul caught an Emirates Airways flight for Dhaka, which took off around 10pm London time the same day.
Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique has been acting as chairman of the party since Feb 8 when a special court in Dhaka sentenced his mother Khaleda Zia to five years in prison for corruption.
Tarique, who was also sentenced to 10 years in jail and fined Tk 20 million on same charges, has been in London since 2008 for ‘treatment’.
He was earlier convicted of money laundering and has several arrest warrants in different cases.
