Zahidul Islam alias Boma Mizan. Times of IndiaJahidul Islam Mizan had an altercation with his brother and came to Dhaka and began work at a garment factory, living in a mess in Taltola.
There he met Sumon and was initiated into the world of militancy.
Mizan was involved with the beginning of Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, JMB, in 2001. Soon, he became an expert bomb maker and got the epithet ‘Boma Mizan’.
He was arrested by RAB in 2009 but was rescued by his cohorts in a daring prison van attack on February 23, 2014 in Trishal.
Since then, he has been in hiding in India, acting as the ‘Ameer’ of JMB, India.
Deputy-commissioner of Counter Terrorism Unit, Mohibul Islam Khan, said: “Boma Mizan is a charismatic leader and despite being in India had links with radicals in Bangladesh.”
Indian National Intelligence Agency, NIA, found Mizan’s links to a bomb explosion in Bardhaman on  October 2, 2014.
After this, Indian law enforcers began a desperate search to apprehend the militant. At last, Mizan, known as Kaosar in India, has been apprehended on 6 August.
Mizan gave a confessional statement. Born in 1979, he went to jail as a teenage delinquent over a scuffle in a cricket match in 1996.
While staying in Dhaka as a garment worker, he met Sumon who took him to the path of radicalism. Sumon gave him training and, in November 2001, Mizan, along with 20-25 other unknown people, took training at Charshi Madrasa in Jamalpur.
Mizan said that everyone in the training had a code name and he was called ‘550’. From dawn till dusk, they received training on self-defence and physical fitness.
Coming back to Dhaka, Mizan learnt to paint on Nickel – the main reason was to learn the craft of using nickel coating on locally made weapons to prevent rusting.
At that time, the main bomb maker was Shakil Ahmed, alias, Molla Omar, who taught Mizan the art of making explosives. Omar and his family were killed in a shootout with RAB on  March 13, 2006.
Later, applying the skills learnt from Omar, he became a bomb maker. At this time, Mizan and others carried out attacks on NGO offices led by Bangla Bhai and Shayakh Rahman.
In JMB’s August 17, 2005 attack in 63 districts, Mizan took part in the attack in Cox’s Bazar.
By this time, he had become an expert in making bombs concealed in geometry boxes, flasks and books.
In 2005, after a RAB drive in Sabujbagh of Dhaka, explosives were recovered and cases lodged against Mizan.
To evade arrest, Mizan fled to India and went to Murshidabad, where he earned a livelihood as a cloth trader.
In 2006, he entered Bangladesh and after staying a brief period in Bangladesh, entered India. His wife, Halima Nusaira, entered India illegally shortly after. In India, they stayed in Nodia.
In 2014, Mizan’s name emerged in an attack in Khagragarh, West Bengal. Last January, Indian intelligence found his name in a conspiracy to assassinate Buddhist religious leader, Dalai Lama. Following the sources, Mizan was finally arrested with two accomplices from Bengaluru on 6 August last.
