A petition seeking a probe into those who are behind those who are involved with the skyrocketing prices of onion has been lodged at the High Court.
“The petition is likely to be heard by the bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam,” said lawyer Md Tanvir Ahmed who filed the writ on Sunday (Nov 17).
The writ seeks a High Court rule on why the failure of those responsible for controlling prices shouldn’t be declared illegal.
Prices of the kitchen staple broke all records when onions sold for Tk 250 per kg on Friday (Nov 15).
The onion market has been in turmoil after India stopped its export to Bangladesh following floods in Maharashtra.
The commerce minister on Saturday (Nov 16) said that the first consignment of onion from Egypt will be flown in to Bangladesh on Tuesday (Nov 19).
