Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam while briefing the media said that 25 people have been named in the charge sheet. The killers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad abused their political identity to unleash a reign of fear at the campus, said the police.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, in a media call, disclosed the details before the charge sheet was due to be submitted in court on Wednesday (Nov 13).
“According to the accused Abrar Fahad didn’t greet the seniors properly and made comments,” he said.
He added that the accused already had a vendetta against Abrar which culminated in him being beaten up.
“A motive for the murder can’t yet be specified. Amongst the many possibilities is that he [Abrar] was suspected to be a Shibir [Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing] activist,” Islam said.
According to the police official, the accused all engaged in ragging and disorderly conduct, continuation of which led to a murder.
“They had been continuing this kind of activities for a long time to teach a lesson by beating someone or to instill fear into the junior students,” AC Islam said before adding anyone they disliked was abused.
Responding to queries on the night of the murder, he said that the killers started beating Abrar up from 10 pm on Oct 7, and the BUET doctor announced him dead at 2:50 pm. “Had the hall and university administration monitored a bit more, this could have been avoided. The probe found negligence on their part.”
He said that this, however, was up to the university authorities whether they want to initiate action.
