The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Counter Terrorism and Transnational unit has detained three suspected operatives of the Neo-JMB, an offshoot of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Law enforcers arrested Md Abdullah, 24, Shafiqul Islam alias Mollaji, 38 and Mostafa Hossain Arif following a raid at Dhaka’s Gabtoli bus stand on Wednesday (Oct 16), DMP spokesperson Masudur Rahman told Bangla Tribune on Thursday (Oct 17).

According to sources, CTTC raided the bus stand based on a tip-off that the alleged militants came to Dhaka to ‘plan anti-government and anti-state projects.’

The police said the three revealed that they were part of the original JMB and joined the offshoot through Holy Artisan bakery attack accused Sohel Mahfuz and also reportedly named other members of their group

According to CTTC sources, the arrestees Shafiqul Islam and Mosatafa Hossain went to India along with their group members Shahin Alam alias Alamin, Ziaur Rahman alias Mohsin Arif, Kabir, Jahirul alias Mamunur Rashid and Harun to receive armed training.

Amongst them, Ziaur Rahman is a suspect in the murder of Salman alias Tareque who was killed in an internal JMB clash in 2012.

Meanwhile, Mamunur Rashid is a death-row convict in the 2015 murder of college student Krishna Kaveri.

The sources claimed that they received training on development of explosives and arms operation from various Indian states including Jharkhand and Kerala.

The detainees allegedly fled to Bangladesh when their accomplices Mamun, Ziaur Rahman and Al Amin were arrested by Indian police after which they resumed their activities with Md Abdullah.

The suspected militants allegedly conspired against the state to overthrow the currents government to establish an Islamic state, worked on recruiting members and establishing contact with other Neo-JMB members.
