War crimes trial of ex-NSI chief takes off

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has indicted former National Security Agency (NSI) director general Mohammad Wahidul Hoque for crimes against humanity in the 1971 Liberation War, officially setting off the trial.
The three-member tribunal led by Shahinur Islam gave the order on Wednesday (Oct 16) and fixed Nov 28 to begin receiving the testimonies.
On Apr 24, 2018, the tribunal issued a warrant against Hoque who was arrested the same day from his Baridhara residence in Dhaka. He has remained in prison since he was produced in court the day after.
Investigators brought three allegations against him after completing the probe on Oct 30, 2018.
According to the case documents, on Mar 28, 1971, Hoque who was responsible for the Pakistan army cavalry 29 regiment adjutant in Rangpur Cantonment opened fire with machine guns attached to military Jeeps killing 500-600 Bangladeshis in the adjacent areas.
He is accused of setting fire to nearby houses, murder, and burning of the bodies during the mass killing.
