Police get 10 days to interrogate Samrat in custody

Police transported Samrat to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Tuesday (Oct 15), when the police was granted 10 days to interrogate him in custody in two cases filed under the firearm and narcotics legislations.
Demonstrations began at the main entrance of the CMM court at Old Dhaka soon after law enforcers brought him to the court.
Samrat’s supports also plastered the court premises’ walls with posters demanding his release and continued to chant slogans in the presence of law enforcement.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Samrat on Oct 6 over his alleged links to the illegal casino business in the capital.
The RAB subsequently launched a raid on Samrat’s office at the Bhuiyan Trade Centre with him in tow.
The elite police unit recovered a foreign pistol, 1,160 yaba tablets, 19 bottles of foreign liquor, two kangaroo hides and 'electrical equipment' to torture people, said RAB.
Police transported Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Tuesday (Oct 15).A mobile court handed Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat a six-month prison sentence for possession of the kangaroo skins under the Wild Animal Protection Act and he was later sent to the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
Two cases were also filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act and Arms Act with the Ramna Police Station.
But the police’s plea for a 20-day remand to grill Samrat in the cases was stayed after he was hospitalised for chest pains. He was sent back to jail after being released from hospital on Saturday (Oct 12).
Samrat, the former president of Jubo League’s Dhaka South wing, was expelled by the organisation following his arrest.
He came under the spotlight after the Rapid Action Battalion unearthed illegal casino hubs in sporting clubs in Dhaka on Sept 18.
