Abrar murder: BUET VC says sorry

PHOTO/Sazzad HossainThe Vice Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Prof Saiful Islam has expressed regret for his absence during the incident of Abrar Fahad murder.
"I am extremely sorry as I could not appear on time," he said on Friday (Oct 11).
The VC's apology came at a discussion with the protesting students regarding the brutal killing of Abrar Fahad the university auditorium that started around 5:30pm.
Prof Islam, however, blamed his poor communication skill for his absence.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Oct 7.
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following the incident, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police.
The BCL also expelled 11 of its members including Jiyon permanently from the organization for their alleged involvement in the murder.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of Friday, as many as 17 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
