BUET bans politics on campus, suspends 19 over Abrar murder

Abrar Fahad. Photo: FACEBOOKAuthorities at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have suspended 19 of its students who have been shown accused in the Abrar Fahad murder case.
BUET Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Saiful Islam made the announcement on Friday (Oct 11) at a discussion with the protesting students. The discussion began at the university auditorium around 5:30pm.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Oct 7.
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following the incident, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police.
The BCL also expelled 11 of its members including Jiyon permanently from the organization for their alleged involvement in the murder.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of Friday, as many as 17 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
