No social media for judicial officers during working hours: SC

Supreme Court Registrar General Md Zakir Hossain made the announcement in a statement on Sunday (Sept 22).
The statement said that the use of social media had increased excessively due to the progress of technology in Bangladesh which can lead to addiction and have a negative impact on regular life.
Although the Cabinet division issued a directive for government employees, there hasn’t until now been a guideline for the judicial employees, it read.
“Under the circumstances, instructions have been issued in regard to the use of social media for judicial employees at the recommendation of the Supreme Court Special Committee for Judicial Reforms,” the statement said.
The official order said that the judicial officers must use social media in line with the current laws, failure to follow which will be considered “misconduct” and be subject to the Bangladesh Judicial Service Guideline-2017 and other relevant laws.
The officers have been instructed to refrain from posting information or comments that go against national unity, hurt the sentiments of any religion.
They have also been asked to remain careful about discriminatory remarks on race and gender. The posts must remain apolitical and not create dissatisfaction amongst the masses.
Statuses that might be considered defamatory, immoral must not be posted. They have also been forbidden to post opinions on any ongoing cases and photos or video clips of any justice.
In addition to strictly following the aforementioned guidelines, they have also been instructed to verify whatever they are posting, and adopt responsible behavior while using social media.
