Casino set-up found at Mohemmaden, Arambagh, Victoria, Dilkusha clubs

A roulette is seen at the Dilkusha Sporting Club when police carry out simultaneous raids at four clubs at Dhaka`s Motijheel.Following the Rapid Action Battalion’s crackdown on gambling dens, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has raided four sporting clubs on Sunday (Sept 22) at the capital’s commercial hub of Motijheel.
Simultaneous raids were carried out at the Mohemmaden Sporting Club, Arambagh Krira Shangha, Victoria Sporting Club and Dilkusha Sporting Club, when casino-style gambling equipment and large quantities of alcohol were seized, said Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain of the DMP’s Motijheel Division.
“The raids were based on specific intelligence input,” he said.
As many as nine gambling decks, Tk 100,000 in cash, large amounts of playing cards, chips and alcohol were found at the Victoria Club.
Two roulette tables, nine decks and 10 different types of knives have been confiscated from Mohammedan club.
Arambagh and Dilkusha clubs also had several gambling equipments, including baccarat and roulette tables. But the clubs were closed at the time of the raids, according to the police
In a meeting of the party’s central executive committee on Sept 14, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reportedly came down hard on leaders of Jubo League, the youth affiliate, over their activities.
Four days later on Sept 18, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided the Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club and the residence of its president and Dhaka Metropolitan South unit Jubo League leader Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan.
They arrested him and seized Tk 2.4 million from a casino in the club and drugs, a huge amount of foreign currencies and illegal firearms from his Gulshan home.
On Sept 18, RAB raided at least five clubs in Dhaka and detained and sentenced 182 people in connection with running “casinos”, gambling, and drug abuse, and sealed off at least two clubs. The same day, raids were conducted at the Wanderers Club in Fakirerpool, Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra in Gulistan and Golden Dhaka Bangladesh in Banani, when a huge amount of cash, fake currencies, drugs and gambling equipment were seized.
Poker Chips are seen at the club when police carry out simultaneous raids at four clubs at Dhaka`s Motijheel.On Friday (Sept 22), RAB arrested Shafiqul Alam Firoz, the president of Dhaka’s Kalabagan Krira Chakra and four others in a raid on the sports club and on Saturday (Sept 23), it raided three clubs in Chattogram— Mohammedan Sporting Club in Sadarghat area, Abahani Limited Club at Halishahar, and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra and confiscated gambling equipment.
