Hundreds of garment workers blocked Dhaka’s Shyamoli crossing for three hours after garment owners shut the factory without prior notice.

Protests began on Wednesday morning when workers of Alif Apparel Limited came to work after the Eid vacations and found the main door locked with a signboard on it saying the factory will remain closed for an indefinite period.

The workers also blocked the Shyamoli crossing demanding payment of their dues and compensation.

Agitated workers said that the factory owners had previously assured them that all their dues would be paid and compensation would be offered if the factory was shut down. However, when they arrived for work, they found the main door locked and the factory closed for an indefinite period.

At 11 pm, police convinced the workers to withdraw the blockade from the roads and traffic was allowed to flow through the crossing. However, the workers continued their protest in front of the factory building.

“Additional police force has been deployed in the area since morning to avert any untoward incident,” said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Mohammadpur zone) Shibli Noman.
