Four ex-Biman staffers jailed for forgery

Representational imageA court in Dhaka has sentenced four former officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines to different terms for embezzling nearly Tk 2.9 million by forging bills and vouchers in 2001.
The convicts are, former manager Mohammad Zinnah, former assistant manager MA Rob, and former accounts superintendents Harunur Rashid and AST Chowdhury.
Of the convicts, Zinnah, Harun and Chowdhury have given with seven years’ rigorous imprisonment while Rob five years.
Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-4 handed the sentence in presence of all the convicts except Harun on Monday (Jul 21).
The court also fined Tk 2.5 million Zinnah, Harun and Taifuddin each, failure to pay the fine will result in one year more in jail. Rob was fined Tk 1.5 million, in default to serve another year.
According to the prosecution, the convicts in collusion with others made forged as many as 166 bills and vouchers between July 2001 and June 2002 and withdrew nearly Tk 2.9 million and embezzled it.
On Sept 5, 2010, the Anti-Corruption Commission sued them with the Airport police and pressed charges against them on Jan 28, 2016, after investigation.
