Students of Dhaka University (DU) have called off the protests at Shahbagh intersection which began earlier in morning to press home their four-point demand, starting with the disassociation of 7 affiliated educational institutes with the university.
The protests were called off around 2pm on Wednesday (Jul 17).
Earlier at 11:30am, a group of agitated students took to the streets and blocked the intersection, causing severe traffic deadlocks in the area.
They also brought out a procession under the banner “Annul 7 affiliated colleges.” Later, the protests also spread to Nilkhet-New Market intersection.
"This affiliation has created an unfavourable situation for both DU and students of the seven colleges," Rupak Ahmed, a first-year student of DU’s political science department, said during the protests.
"We seek relief from this unwanted trouble," he added.
Apart from disassociating the seven educational institutes, the agitated DU students also demanded automation of the university's administrative and academic activities; controlling external vehicles movement inside the university campus and fixing rickshaw fares.
Earlier on Tuesday (Jul 16), students of DU-affiliated college students staged a protest at Nilkhet-New Market intersection to realise their 4-point demand.
