Bangladesh PoliceIn the last 9 years, police personnel were punished in 0.120191 million incidents. The law enforcers were punished for a variety of crimes including, extortion, rape, drug trade, abduction, murder, hijacking and for framing people with false cases.

Observers say that the punishment is derisory; not even 1 per cent of accused lose their jobs. Assistant Inspector General (media) Sohel Rana says: “for divisional punishment, insubordination, abuse of power, non-professional behavior, taking of bribes get importance.”
As per Police Act, 1861, if any member of the police is found to be involved in crime then two types of punishment can be given, heavy and light.
Under the heavy punishment, termination, demotion, suspension of promotion, suspension of increment or divisional case can be lodged.
Light punishment includes removal from duty.
Nur Khan Liton, who works with police divisional punishment, says: “we have noticed that an offender is rarely terminated form the post as punishment; usually, it’s mentioned that a police officer is closed and if there’s more inquiry, the common line is: “the offending police member has been punished.”
In some cases, they are attached somewhere else, most remain in the force, demotion, suspension of increment or termination are rare, he added.
In most cases, complaints are presented with least importance and consequently, the offenders get release.
However, in recent times, punishment is increasing. Former IGP Muhammad Nurul Huda, said: “punishment is needed to show there’s discipline in the force.
