UN force chiefs praise Bangladeshi peacekeepers

Bangladesh is one of the largest troop contributing nations to the UN peacekeeping missions. MONUSCO/ABEL KAVANAGHForce commanders of the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Missions have highly appreciated the performance, discipline and professionalism of Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
A 35-member delegation, which included 12 commanders led by Military Adviser to the UN Lt Gen Carlos Loitey, made the statement while visiting Bangladesh’s permanent mission to the UN, BSS reported quoting an official statement released on Thursday (Jun 20).
“Bangladesh’s peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS) is highly appreciable,” Lt Gen Carlos Loity said during the visit.
The delegation also applauded Bangladesh as the most reliable, supportive, generous troops and police contributing country and expressed deep satisfaction over the discipline and professionalism of Bangladesh’s troops in the face of any most challenging circumstances.
They visited the Bangladesh Mission on the sideline of 17th Head of Military Components Conference 2019, being held at the UN Headquarters from June 17 to June 21.
During the visit, UN Permanent Representative of Bangladesh and Ambassador Masud Bin Momen highlighted Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations as one of the top troops and police contributing countries over the years.
In this regard, he also mentioned Bangladesh’s rising deployment of female peacekeepers as well as providing modern equipment and training.
Defence Adviser to Bangladesh Permanent Mission Brigadier General Khan Firoz Ahmed briefed the delegation about Bangladesh’s engagement in the UN peacekeeping operations.
“Till now, 163,181 Bangladeshi peacekeepers participated in 54 UN peacekeeping missions, of whom 1,616 are female. Currently, there are 6,500 Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in 10 missions. As many as 146 peacekeepers lost their lives while 227 were injured while performing their duties,” he said.
He said Bangladesh was always at the forefront in UN peacekeeping operations and also portrayed Bangladesh’s success stories in bringing peace at various war-ravaged parts of the world in the last 30 year
