Help the Children Foundation is doing something extraordinary on Eid day (June 16, 2018).On Eid day, at around 11 am in the morning, about 15-20 street children were waiting to the east side of the Kamlapur rail station.
The excited little ones led us to an organization, waiting with Eid gifts, food and festival pocket money.
Two speakers were placed on two trucks to provide some loud music to the children and give them a roaring start to Eid celebrations.
The organization behind the thoughtful step is called Help the Children Foundation.
The aim is to engage the children and give them a chance to enjoy their free time on Eid day, said Arifur Rahman, a staff of the organization.
A microphone was passed around and the children began to unleash their singing, reciting talents.
While the children were busy with the microphone, new clothes were being distributed. A voluntary worker of the organization, Md Hassan says: “we have been arranging such an event since 2012.”
From this year, we are handing over Tk50 as pocket money to each of the children, he added.
“This year, around 1000 street children will be given gifts and pocket money.”
Md Hassan informed that the main work of the organization is related to education and health.
“We have also arranged open heart surgeries for several people.”
Help the Children Foundation is doing something extraordinary on Eid day (June 16, 2018).What is impressive is the fact that many students of public and private universities are engaged with the effort.
While the less fortunate children were getting a flavour of Eid, on the other side of the rail station, clothes were being distributed among floating people by a body called ‘Oder Jonno Aamra’ – meaning roughly, our efforts for them.
Volunteers of the organization say that they started the initiative in 2011 and pay from their own pockets to bring smile to the faces of the destitute and the less fortunate.
There was also special diet for the floating people and the menu featured: kachchi biriyani, sweets and soft drinks.
“We have arranged food for 150 people,” said one volunteer.
In a city where everyone is engaged in a rat race to outpace the other person, often, our treatment of the less fortunate involves giving some money hurriedly to get the duty out of the way.
But, a few notes handed out perfunctorily hardly captures the essence of Ramadan which aims to inject compassion plus humane qualities in us.
The one month of moderation has a spiritual side which asks us to reach out to our fellow humans on the culmination day - Eid.
These two organisations are doing just that –with some material gifts, they are giving the less fortunate the most valuable things of Eid day – their time and their love!
