Rape: Children are the prime targets

Representational ImageRape is the most horrendous form of violence inflicted upon women. Unfortunately, according to a research, this abysmal bestiality has been on the rise of late. The aforementioned research, conducted from Jan 1, 2018 to May 15, 2019 shows, the total number of rape committed in the first four months of 2019 is almost equal to the ones committed throughout the entire year of 2018.

According to the data provided by the above mentioned research, 490 women and children were subjected to rape last year; whereas, 419 women and children were victimized by the same depraved violence dating from Jan 1, 2019 to May 15, 2019; which means, the number of rape in the first four and a half months of 2019 has escalated approximately to 2.5 times, compared to that of 2018.There is a increase in the number of rapes.

This research has been conducted after reviewing copious amount of data, collected from three national dailies by the research department of Bangla Tribune.

The collected data on rape has been reviewed after categorising them into five different sections, which are: attempt to rape, rape, subsequent murder after rape, gang rape and subsequent murder after gang rape.

According to research findings, the most number of victims subjected to rape are below the age of 16.

Rise of rape: comparisonIn 2019, the number of child rape has seen a diabolical rise with rapes within the first four and a half months of 2019 exceeding that of 2018.

Last year, 289 children were raped, whereas, 296 children have been raped from Jan 1, 2019 to May 15, 2019.

Furthermore, research in question reveals that even male children get violated. In the first four and a half months of the running year, 10 boys were also raped; in 2018, the number of violated male children was 13. 

Children are subjected to rape more: 

According to a research conducted by Bangla Tribune, in 2018, children (aged between 0-16 years) were subjected to this form of brutal violence the most. Among the total of 311 incidents of rape that took place last year, 212 of the victims are children, while the rest are above 16.

Again, 67 females, aged above 16, and 27 children became victims of gang rape.

Disquietingly, the rate of this atrocious violence has increased to a frightening extent.

From Jan 1 till May 15 of the current year, 220 children became victims of rape while 14 were murdered after being violated.

Furthermore, 28 children faced attempted rape while 13 females aged above 16 also encountered sexual abuse.

Three victims were murdered after being gang raped, whereas, 14 children were killed following violation.

Men are not safe either

On Aug 3, 2018, 11 children were rescued by RAB from a restaurant situated at Shantirhat Bazar of Pomra Union, Ranguniya, Chattogram. According to a statement provided by RAB, the children were being sexually molested by a man named, Kamal Uddin.

The arrested perpetrator also forced those children to abet him in drug dealing.

In September, 2018, a madrasa student (12) was also subjected to sexual abuse at Jatrabari, Dhaka.

As per the information provided by the mass media, the aforementioned victim dropped out of the madrasa he was admitted to, and eventually, informed his family about being abused when they urged him to go back to the madrasa. His family filed a case against the perpetrator.

Allegedly, 2 other male children were raped at Ranguniya in 2018. On the other hand, as reported by the research in question, 10 male children have been subjected to rape, dating from Jan 1, 2019 to May 15, 2019.

What is worse, law enforcers came across the corpse of a male child at Siddhirganj, Narayanganj in January, 2019.

It is suspected that the child was violated and then murdered.  

Again, another male child was allegedly raped at Kuliyarchor, Kishoreganj, in April 2019, while two other children of the same gender were abused at an orphanage in Birganj Upazila of Dinajpur.

The head of the orphanage in question, who allegedly raped the two male children, has been apprehended by law enforcers.

Also, a madrasa teacher was arrested for sexually abusing one of his students at Rajshahi’s Puthia, in April, 2019. In the same month, another madrasa student was subjected to sexual abuse at Sribordi, Sherpur.

The research shows that 10 male children were subjected to rape from Jan 1, 2019 to May 15, 2019.

As reported by the newspapers, most of the rape incidents take place in the urban areas of the country. In the running year, 157 women and children have been subjected to rape, 25 women and children became victims of rape attempts, whereas 50 other women and children were gang raped. What is worse, 14 other victims were subsequently murdered after violation.Most of the rape incidents take place in the urban areas of the country.

Between Jan 1 till May 15 of the running year, 123 women and children living in urban areas were raped.

In addition, 33 victims were subjected to gang rape, while 11 other victims were murdered after violation. 

Students are undergoing sexual violence the most

According to research conducted by Bangla Tribune, 181 students encountered sexual violence in 2018. Among which, 121 were raped, 23 encountered attempts to rape, 22 were gang raped and 14 killed after violation.

Furthermore, research findings show that 16 housewives and 14 RMG workers were victims of gang rape among 490 victims, who encountered sexual violence.

As per the accumulated data, the rate of sexual violence has increased alarmingly in the first four and a half months of 2019.

This year, 186 students were subjected to rape; of the victims, 19 faced gang rape, whereas 9 other victims were killed after being violated. On the other hand, 16 housewives and 6 female RMG workers were subjected to gang rape.

Of the total 419 victims who were subjected to sexual violence, 42 are housewives, 17 female RMG workers, while 27 of them are mentally challenged. This year, 186 students were subjected to rape; of the victims, 19 faced gang rape, whereas 9 other victims were killed after being violated.

To conclude, according to the research conducted by Bangla Tribune, compared to last year (2018), sexual violence is going through an upsurge in the current year (2019).
