No inmate will be released during this EidThe government will not release any convict during this Eid.
Assistant Secretary of Home Ministry Mohammad Ali said, “We had a meeting to release convicts before Eid, but we are yet to get any final instruction from the high ups till today (Thursday). So no inmates are going to release this Eid.”
It is a practice to release convicts with petty crimes or who spent most of their prison times or disabled during special days like Eid or Independence Day.
Additional Inspector General of Prison Directorate Abdullah Al Mamun told Bangla Tribune, “District committees put forward the lists of prisoners who are eligible to get released on the special days and send those to home ministry.”
He said, “On some occasions, the process completes after Eid and the inmates release accordingly.”
The home ministry had a meeting on the issue on May 21 after the district committees sent their lists for decisions.
A total of 3,934 were released under state pardon from 2009 to 2018, according to sources.
