HC orders quick settlement of Khaleda’s bail plea

Khaleda Zia. (File Photo)The High Court (HC) directed the trial court concerned in Cumilla to quickly dispose the bail petition filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in an arson case.

A High Court bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order on Monday.
Advocate Khondokar Mahbub Hossain, barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, barrister Kayser Kamal, barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman and advocate Md Masud Rana moved for Khaleda Zia in the court.
On the other hand, Attorney General Mahbube Alam, Additional Attorney General Murad Reza and Deputy Attorney General AM Amin Uddin were present from the state side.
Earlier on Jun 7, a hearing was held on the bail plea of BNP chairperson over Cumilla arson case filed under Special Power Act.
Khaleda’s legal counsels sought direction to hear on bail petition before the trial court and placed a copy of HC order regarding the issue.
The case was filed under Special Power Act-1974 with Chouddogram Police Station in Comilla on Feb 3, 2015, after a bus was set on fire on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chauddogram.
The incident left seven passengers dead on the spot and about 25-26 people were injured.
Khaleda Zia who stands accused in 34 cases has landed in jail on February 8 this year, after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in Zia orphanage trust corruption case.
