Before being released in February, Jahalam spent three years behind bars instead of the real accused Abu Salek on charges of loan fraud and embezzlement of Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank Limited. File photoThe Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will move the High Court to freeze the process of making a movie based on the story of Jahalam, who was wrongly-convicted and imprisoned for three years due to an identity mix-up.
The graft watchdog is set to file a petition with the court on Tuesday (Mar 19), its counsel Khurshid Alam Khan told the Dhaka Tribune.
“We have prepared all the necessary documents, which will be submitted to a vacation bench tomorrow [Tuesday],” the English daily quoted him saying on Monday (Mar 18).
“In a verbal order on Mar 6, the court said nothing can be done on any sub-judice matter. The attempt to make a film would tantamount to be contempt of court,” added Khurshid.
Jahalam was arrested in 2016 after he was mistaken for Abu Salek, who was accused in 33 cases filed by the ACC over loan fraud and the embezzlement of nearly Tk 185 million from Sonali Bank.
He was released on Feb 4 this year, a day after it was brought to the High Court’s attention that he was serving time instead of Salek.
Recently, film maker Maria Tushar announced that they were planning a movie on Jahalam's life, and that she had registered with the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation to direct it.
