A cleaning campaign was opened in a bizarre fashion as Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) staffers were seen throwing papers on a clean street for newly-elected Mayor Atiqul Islam, who later kicked off the campaign.
The incident was captured on camera on Sunday (Mar 17) on the opening of ‘Special Cleaning Campaign and Wall Painting’ programme marking the 99th birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
DNCC staffers and social activists were seen cleaning Tejgaon’s ‘Mayor Anisul Haque Road’ and adjacent streets since morning.
Around 11am, two cleaners were found littering torn papers on the street.
The cleaners, requesting to go unnamed, said that as the roads were cleaned ahead of the launching ceremony, they collected some trash to leave those on the road at the instruction of their superiors.
Later around 11:45am, Mayor Atiqul opened the campaign by cleaning the street with students and volunteers.
