Bangladesh Police has once again forwarded a proposal to the government for creating supernumerary posts to promote senior officers.
Ahead of the general elections in November last year, 230 senior officers were promoted to supernumerary posts. According to the fresh proposal, the police now want 289 posts of deputy inspectors general (DIG), additional DIGs and superintendents (SP) to be created to promote as many as officers.
Sources say the proposal forwarded to the home ministry states that the police plus the administration cadre are both important sectors, which have a symbiotic relation and both represent the government on the field.
It also highlights the posting deficiencies at the higher level of the police service.
Speaking to Bangla Tribune, home ministry Additional Secretary (police & NTMC) Nd Nurul Islam said that a decision is yet to be made.
“The promotions will be given in phases after evaluating the proposals. An initial meeting has been held but no decision has been made. However, the government is actively considering it,” he said.
Bangladesh Police proposes creation of seven DIG posts at headquarters in addition to the existing 12 as well as 12 new posts of additional DIGs against the existing as many.
Another 12 SPs have been sought for the headquarters in addition to the existing 55.
Altogether 289 posts of DIGs, additional DIGs and SPs have been sought for several other units, including the metropolitan polices, Anti Terrorism Unit, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and railway, highway, industrial, river and tourist polices.
