This file photo shows an unexploded Arges grenade on Bangabandhu Avenue after the attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004.Police has found 55 rounds of bullet and a live Arges grenade from a dustbin at the capital’s Paltan area.

The live grenade was later defused by the counter terrorism unit’s bomb disposal squad, which rushed to the scene when informed around 11:30pm on Sunday, said Paltan police OC Mahmudul Haque.

“Few street children saw the bullets and grenade inside the waste bin and informed police personnel who were on patrol duty,” said Haque before adding, “Police rushed to the scene and called in the bomb disposal unit, which defused the grenade.”

Of the recovered bullets there were eight rounds of 9mm bullets, 28 rounds of bullets for AK 47 rifle and 19 rounds of shotgun bullets.

Police also said the bullets had imprinted on them ‘Made in Pakistan’.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) units’ Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahmat Ullah, also the chief of the bomb disposal unit said, “Although the grenade was a bit old, it was live and deadly.”

According to one police official, although the recovered bullets and grenade looked old, those are not from the liberation war period.

“The Arges grenade, looked similar to the ones used in the brutal attack of Aug 21 in 2004,” he said adding that they are trying to find out, who had those ammunitions in their possession and left those there.
