Nazmul Huda granted bail in graft case

File photo shows former minister Nazmul Huda, who now leads the political party Trinamool BNP.The Supreme Court has granted bail to former BNP minister Nazmul Huda in a graft case in which he was sentenced by the High Court to four years imprisonment.

The top court permitted Huda to move an appeal before this court against the verdict passed by the High Court.

The Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Monday (Jan 21) following a leave to appeal petition filed by Huda challenging the verdict. Huda also sought bail from the Supreme Court.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Dhanmondi Police on Mar21, 2007, accusing Huda of taking Tk 24 million as bribe from businessman Mir Zahir Hossain at different times in exchange for giving him five government contracts for construction.

On August 27, 2007, a special court handed Huda seven years' rigorous jail term while his wife was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
