Hundreds of ready-made garment (RMG) workers of a factory took to the street at Adabor area in Dhaka, demanding the implementation of the new wage structure announced by the government.
They started to make blockade in front of Shampa market around 9am on Wednesday (Jan 16), said police.
“The workers are continuing their protest peacefully. We have talked with the protesters and they said that they want the implementation of the new wage structure announced by the government. They want assurance from the owner of their factory,” Adabor police OC SM Kowsar Ahmed told Bangla Tribune.
“We already contacted with the owner,” added OC Kowsar.
According to the revised pay structure for the garment sector, there is a slight increase in both basic and gross wages in six of the seven grades.
The gross hike ranges from a token Tk 15 to a modest Tk 747, effective from December last year and to be adjusted from February.
In the new pay scale, which comes after years, the annual increment has been fixed at 5 percent.
