File photo of the Dhaka University Central Students` Union (DUCSU)After a long hiatus of 28 years, the election to Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) is slated for Mar 31.
Reportedly, the administration and student bodies are getting ready for the election and some former student leaders feel that it’s the responsibility of the university authority to ensure co-existence of different student bodies
To amend the DUCSU organogram, a five-member panel with FH Hall Proctor Mizanur Rahman as the convener had discussions with student bodies on Jan 10.
At the meet, demands were made to ensure proposals for women leadership, the formation of new posts of secretaries and peaceful co-existence of all parties.
Former DUCSU vice-president (VP) Mahfuza Khanam said: “We were in the academic session of 1966-1967 and, at that time, Tofail Ahmed was the VP. The atmosphere at that time was different.”
Saying that the current students did not experience a DUCSU election, she deplored: “We have seen in recent times that the student wing of the ruling party always controls all university halls.”
“DUCSU is essential, otherwise students will be lured into immoral and unethical engagements.”
Student bodies of all parties need to be present along with the chance for all sides to take part in the elections, she observed and added: “The voters should feel safe to cast their votes.”
She also welcomed the proposal for more women seats in DUCSU.
The first DUCSU general secretary in Bangladesh period Mahbub Zaman, said: “We feel that DUSCU election will ensure peaceful co-existence of all sides; if general students take part in the election spontaneously then all parties will come to campus.”
When we were at the university, the assistant general secretary (AGS) was usually a female and if needed, more female posts need to be formed, he added.
“DUCSU will enable the students to exercise their political savvy and create an atmosphere for healthy politics.”
Dhaka University Chhatra League president Sanjit Chandra Das told Bangla Tribune: “We welcome co-existence but we will not permit Shibir members to enter the campus.”
