Supreme Court of BangladeshThe Appellate Division has upheld a High Court order giving 19 teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology pension and post-retirement leave (PRL) benefits according to the 2015 payment scale.
A four-member appeal bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmood Hossain gave the order on Thursday (Jan 10), scrapping a review appeal by University Grants Commission (UGC) and BUET administration.
Barrister Urmi Rahman moved for the teachers while AF Hassan Arif moved for UGC and BUET.
Rahman said that two former vice-chancellors of the university, Dr Md Monoarul Islam and Professor Shaheda Rahman along with five other teachers will be getting pension benefits only.
Moreover, former vice-chancellor Dr Md Mazharul Hoque along with 11 teachers will enjoy pension and PRL benefits.
The 19 retired BUET teachers filed three petitions with the HC demanding pension and PRL benefits.
The HC ruled in favour of the petitions in February of 2018, ordering that the benefits will be effective within 30 days of receiving the verdict’s copy.
UGC and BUET later moved the apex court which scrapped their leave to appeal. After that the institutions pleaded for a review which was rejected as well.
