The agitated garment workers have withdrawn their demonstration hours after they blockaded the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at the capital’s Uttara point on Sunday.
Their withdrawal came as the owners of their respective garment factories assured the workers of implementing the new wage board at their workplaces, Navid Kamal Shoibal, Deputy Commissioner (Uttara division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier in the morning, hundreds of garment workers blocked the highway, one of the thoroughfares to and from Dhaka, pressing their demand.
The workers of 5-6 garment factories took to the streets around 8:30am in the Azampur area, Uttara model police OC Nure Alam Siddiquee told Bangla Tribune.
They then blocked the vehicular movement prompting heavy traffic congestion on both sides of the road, stretching from the city’s Banani to Gazipur’s Tongi.
