Ex-Hawa Bhaban staffer involved in Tk 180m election plot: RAB

The arrestee has been identified as Ali Haider who RAB said is the managing director of an export-import company.One of the three people arrested over the seizure of Tk 180 million from a Dhaka office had close links to the ‘Hawa Bhaban’, the Banani building which had been the centre of power during the BNP-Jamaat Alliance government, says the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
On Tuesday (Dec 25), the elite police unit arrested export-import firm and contractor United Corporation’s Managing Director Ali Haider with Tk 80 million in cash and Tk 100 million in cheque from Motijheel’s City center on Tuesday (Dec 25).
RAB spokesperson Mufti Mahmud Khan said that the money was brought illegally from abroad to influence the parliamentary elections.
In relation to the matter RAB raided BNP’s Shariatpur-3 candidate Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu owned Amena Enterprise at Gulshan from where they arrested two officials Joynal Abedin and Alamgir Hossain on Tuesday (Dec 25).
Haider was held with Tk 80 million and some signed bank cheques worth Tk 10 million.Joynal had close links to the ‘Hawa Bhaban’, said the senior RAB officer.
“United Corporation has been involved in transactions worth millions that are being channelled to Jamaat-BNP,” said Khan.
He said that the owners of the three organization involved in the matter are all BNP activists and leaders.
Khan said that there are allegations of gold smuggling against United Corporation owner Mahmudul Hasan and United Enterprise owner Atikur Rahman is the Jhalakathi Chatradal President.
Meanwhile, Amena Enterprise from where Joynul was arrested is owned by BNP’s Shariatpur-3 candidate Miah Nuruddin Ahmad Apu who has been sued under the Anti-terrorism Act as well as for money laundering.
“These corporation released around Tk 1.5 billion after which the violence started. This illegal money is sponsoring the violence in the country,” said RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed.
‘United Corporation rented the offices at the 27th floor of City Center two months ago and have been working to influence the upcoming polls,” he added.
Ahmed said that this money has been wired from Dubai through Hundi and that the Shariatpur-3 candidate Apu had received Tk 6 million from here after which the violence started.
