M Rashiduzzaman Millat. FILE PHOTOThe High Court has stayed the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to reinstate the nomination of BNP candidate for Jamalpur-1, M Rashiduzzaman Millat.
The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Md Khairul Alam gave the order on Thursday (Dec 13) after the hearing of a writ filed by former information minister and Awami League’s candidate for the same constitueny, Abul Kalam Azad.
Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the writ while the state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Saju.
“Rashiduzzaman is ineligible to contest the polls as he has been convicted,” said Khurshid Alam. He added that the returning officers had scrapped his nomination but the Election Commission gave it back to him after the appeal.
“The HC has stayed the EC’s directive; hence he will not be able to run for the polls.”
