Organogram cleared for 999 emergency servicesThe National Emergency Service 999 is set to get its own organogram and logistics after the secretaries’ panel on administrative development gave the green light to a proposal paving the way to operate it as a separate entity.
In December 2017, Bangladesh officially launched the emergency helpline after a year in the testing phase.
Police, fire service and ambulance services are available from any phone (mobile or fixed line) dialling the 999, which is completely toll free.
Bangladesh Police monitors and manages the service. The proposal received the nod of Secretaries’ Committee for Administrative Development last month, which means it will now act as a unit of the police.
According to people familiar with the matter, the home ministry has finalised a three-acre land plot in capital’s Demra for a 20-storey office building, two barracks and residential quarters for officers of the unit.
In October 2016, the Information and Communication Technology Division launched the service on a test basis.
A year later, on Oct 8, 2017, the police headquarters were tasked to operate and manage the services. An additional deputy inspector general-led team was put in charge.
On Dec 12 the same year, it was officially launched at the Police Control Room by Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
According to officials at police headquarters, the proposal for an organogram was forwarded to the home ministry in May 2017. It proposed creating 522 posts including an additional inspector general and allotting 44 vehicles for the unit.
The ministry, however, cleared 519-strong manpower and 27 vehicles before forwarding it to the public administration ministry, which revised it down to 250 officials and three vehicles.
On Sept 13, it received the green light from the finance ministry before the secretaries committee cleared it in October.
