National Curriculum and Textbook Board, NCTB, is accused of giving the printing of primary school and non-formal education materials to a foreign company, instead of a local one.
This has resulted in resentment among local printers and to express their displeasure, leading figures from the publishing industry went to NCTB.
They have threatened to stop printing and seek legal recourse.
“We shall not accept the sinister move to have books printed overseas; if this is done then we shall stop all other pending work,” said agitating local publishing leaders.
Chairman of the printing association, Shahid Serniabat, told Bangla Tribune: “NCTB wants to print 33 lakh books for non-formal and 32 lakh books for primary level overseas.”
The printing cost may be lower abroad but the government will have to spend an additional 31 per cent on import duty, he added.
NCTB chairman, Narayan Chandra Saha, told Bangla Tribune, “The information of the printers is not correct, work will be given as per law and through a proper process of calling tenders.”
