Police have started collecting information on transport workers – drivers and their assistants across the country as part of its plan to update the ‘citizens’ digital database’.
The move, which is still at initial phase, is being carried out under Citizen Information Management System (CIMS) initiative.
Back in early 2016, police launched the CMIS initiative to digitalise the citizens’ information with a view to nabbing the criminals as well as tracing militants and their hideouts.
Sources at the home ministry said, this time, police are being assisted by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BTRA) and the transport owners’ associations.
“The BRTA has data on the drivers as it issues the driving licence while the transport owners have been asked to gather the information on drivers’ assistance,” Additional IG (traffic management) of Police Headquarter Mossarof Hossain Miaji told Bangla Tribune.
Transport owners said they began collecting information on drivers and their assistants after police asked them to do so.
They, however, are yet to hand over the data to police and have no knowledge on what the police would do with it.
“We are yet to learn the details on what purpose police are gathering the information,” Office Secretary of Bus Owners Association Samdani Khadakar told Bangla Tribune.
