Barapukuria coal scam: Initial probe suggests graft, says ACC

Dinajpur-based ACC Deputy Director Benajir Ahmed briefs the media after inspecting the Barapukuria coal mine offices.The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says it smells a rat in the disappearance of 144,000 tonnes coal from the Barapukuria mine in Dinajpur.

“We have checked the documents, which says the mine’s coal yard should have a stock of 146,000 tonnes, but in reality, it’s only 2,000 tonnes. There’s no trace of the remaining 144,000 tonnes” Deputy Director Benajir Ahmed of the ACC’s Dinajpur offices told the media on Monday.
Around 3:30pm, a five-member ACC team entered the coal mine offices. After emerging from the inspection, ACC official Ahmed said that they have notified the headquarters.
“The mine’s managing director has been removed as well as two officials have been suspended and a fourth one has been transferred. Officials from the ACC headquarters will question them,” he said before adding that their investigation will take 60 days and its the ACC headquarters, which will initiate legal measures.
Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Managing Director Habib Uddin Ahmed and others have been accused of selling coal around Tk 2 billion through fraud, abusing their power.
The Barapukuria thermal power plant was shut down Sunday for an indefinite period for a lack of fuel supply.
