Familiar scenario on the streets of Dhaka City; The Cabinet has proposed the feasibility of separate lanes for VIPs and emergency services on such streets FILE PHOTOBased on the amount of air pollution, the ministry of environment, forest and climate change wants taxes on vehicles. A proposal in this regard is being formulated by the Department of Environment (DoE). With recommendations for implementation next year, the proposal will be sent to the National Board of Revenue, NBR.
Earlier, parliamentary committee recommended fixing of tax on cars based on carbon emissions.
A parliamentary committee member said that in many countries of the developed world, tax is imposed based on emission rate, which is helping to reduce cars with high emissions.
President of the parliamentary committee, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, said: “This recommendation has been made to bring down the number of cars that pollute environment.”
Ministry has said that they will finalise it by December and send it to NBR.
Every year, the budget has a focus point and next year it will be ‘green budget’ which will help pay more attention to environmental issues, said Saber Hossain Chowdhury.
Additional Secretary of the environment, forest and climate change ministry, Alamgir Monsurul Alam, said: “Based on the recommendation of the parliamentary committee, DoE has been given the task of formulating a proposal; they will make the report based on the amount of emission by a variety of vehicles and send it to the ministry; later, this will be turned into a proposal and sent to NBR.”
