New Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam. Photo taken from Bridges Division websiteSenior Secretary to the Bridges Division Khandker Anwarul Islam has been appointed as the new cabinet secretary, effective immediately.
A gazette was issued by Public Administration ministry on Sunday (Oct 10).
Anwarul Islam will replace Mohammad Shafiul Alam, who will be appointed as alternative executive director of the World Bank for next three years after his tenure ends in October.
Islam will join the post on Nov 1, said another Public Administration Ministry gazette issued on Sunday.
Anwarul Islam joined Bridges Division under the road transport and bridges minister as a Secretary (in-charge) on 13 Nov 2011. He was promoted to the post of Secretary on Jan 31, 2013, and to the post of Senior Secretary on Jul 13, 2017.
He is also the ex-officio executive director of Bangladesh Bridge Authority. Prior to this posting, he had worked in the Cabinet Division as an additional secretary.
He joined the Civil Service in 1983 and worked in various capacities both at the field and central level. He worked as upazila magistrate, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), additional deputy commissioner and deputy commissioner in-charge in the field administration.
Islam also served as a director and also a secretary in National Sports Council, a senior assistant secretary and deputy secretary at the parliament secretariat, as a director in the department of Relief and Rehabilitation.
He has experience in various development projects funded by the World Bank, UNFPA, ADB, CIDA, DGIS, UNDP and other development partners as DD, DPD, Project Director and National Project Director.
Islam earned his honours and masters in Social Welfare from University of Dhaka. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in Development Planning.
He successfully completed a number of foreign training in project management, HRD Skills for Functional Managers, Private Sector Seed Management etc.
He is married to Kamrun Nahar, who is also a secretary and currently in charge of women and children’s affairs.
