'Asrayan-2' to benefit 250,000 downtrodden

PHOTO/Ashrayanpmo.gov.bdThe government has taken an initiative for the third time to amend the Asrayan-2 project. The objective to turn Cox’s Bazar airport into an international one. Once the project is implemented, 250,000 people will be helped in various ways, according to the PM’s office. Once this is implemented, the rehabilitation of the landless, homeless and destitute people will be possible.
The third amendment of the project has been approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). To turn Cox’s Bazar into an international airport, the territory of the airport has to be expanded by acquiring land.
People losing land for the work will have to be rehabilitated. To help them resettle, 139 five storied buildings under the Asrayan-2 project will be constructed.
The project duration has been extended by three years and a recommendation has been made to increase project expenses.
The total project cost will be Tk 48.26 billion and already, Tk 11.69 billion has been allocated. The money will come from government funds.
To rehabilitate 250,000 landless, homeless and destitute people, 5,400 CI sheet barracks, 5,270 semi-concrete barracks, 3,710 semi-concrete houses and 166,290 CGI sheet houses will be constructed.
In municipal areas, 50 multi-storied buildings, 900 community centres will be built and 14,890 deep tube wells placed.
Planning Minister Abdul Mannan, says: “Through the project the socio-economic condition of homeless people is being improved; this will play a role in eradicating poverty and is aligned to the 7th five year plan and SDGs.”
