The engines might be brought when the prime minister visits India during the first week of October, he said on Tuesday (Sept 17).
“There is a crisis of locomotives in the railway. The ones that were supposed to arrive from India on loan are expected to reach within 2020,” he added.
“We wanted to rent some engines from them but they agreed to give 20 locomotives to us as a gesture of friendship. Ten of them are metre gauges and the rest are broad gauges,” the minister said.
According to the minister there are 233 locomotives at the railway amongst which 68 percent have expired.
“We have also reached an agreement with the Indian railway to increase the operations of Moitree Express in the Dhaka-Kolkata route from four days a week to six,” he said.
