Construction for 2nd unit of Rooppur Nuclear power plant kicks off

In November, Prime Minister Sheik Hasina inaugurated the construction work of the first unit.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the Construction of the second reactor unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
Flanked by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Ivanovich Borisov, she kicked off the concrete pouring at Pabna’s Iswardi on Saturday.
A special helicopter flew the prime minister to the plant at 11:50am on Saturday.
According to the itinerary of her visit she is scheduled to speak to an event of civil society representatives.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Dohi Han to deliver a goodwill speech with Borisov will attend the occasion.
The premier will address a public rally organised by local Awami League at the Police Lines premises at 3pm.
She will inaugurate 49 development projects including newly built Pabna Medical College Building, new building of Pabna Textile Engineering College, newly built Pabna Open University, newly built Pabna Bonomali Institute, newly built residential hotel and faculty of Pabna University of Science and Technology, Ishwardi-Dhalarchar rail line project, Chief judicial magistrate's court building, Bhangura-Naogaon road and regional passport office.
On Nov 30 last year, Hasina inaugurated the construction work of the first unit.
As per the agreements, the first 1200MW unit of the nuclear power plant would be completed by June 2023 and the second unit by April 2024. The plant will use two generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors.
The power plant is being built under an agreement with Russia which will finance most part of the total cost of the plant.
The mega project is being implemented by the state-run Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) under the Science and Technology Ministry, with financial, technical and technological support given by Russia through its state nuclear agency, Rosatom.
Atomostroyexport, the contractor appointed by Russia’s state-owned atomic power body, Rosatom, is constructing the RNPP at a cost of $12.65 billion.
Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and Russian company JSC Atomstroyexport signed a general contract for construction of RNPP on December 25 in 2015.
Russia will provide all assistance under the agreement for setting up the plant, including providing the fuel and taking back the used fuel.
