Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader speaks to the media at the party president’s office in Dhanmondi on Saturday (Jun 15). FOCUS BANGLAPrime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina herself is dealing with the matter involving the top leadership of the party’s student affiliate Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), says General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
“I will not make any comments on Chhatra League (BCL). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had nominated the leadership and I had only announced,” he said on Wednesday (Sept 11).
Speaking to the media at his Secretariat offices, Quader, the road transport minister, made it clear that any decision over the BCL was entirely the party chief’s call. “Any amendment or change to BCL will be handled by the prime minister herself.”
On the upcoming council of BCL, the minister said: “There has been no decision about it yet. It’s an internal matter of the party.”Toll on highways worldwide system: Quader
TOLL IMPOSED ON HIGHWAYS WORLDWIDE SYSTEM
Quader said that toll on the highways is imposed throughout the world. “This system is followed throughout the world then why not in Bangladesh?”
“Imposing toll isn’t going have any negative impact on the general people,” he said and added that the money collected will be used to fix and maintain the roads.
Responding to queries on the matter, he said that toll will be imposed on the four-lane highways but the district roads will not be included.
Quader said that this was a direct order from the prime minister and cannot be taken lightly.
He said that no final call has been made on whether toll will be charged on Padma Bridge but the work will be completed by December next year.
Slamming the BNP on its claim of blatant corruption in the construction of the bridge, Quader said, “BNP has no experience of constructing four-lane bridges. They criticise for the sake of criticising.”

On the Rangpur-3 by-polls, he said that they have floated a candidate there but given that it was Awami League ally Jatiya Party’s seat, any kind of leniency will be allowed based on the party chief’s decision.
